THE STUDIO WINDOW
July 7 - 31, 2022, by appointment
Justine Kurland Studio
20 Jay Street #309C, Brooklyn, NY 11201
Justine Kurland Studio is pleased to present The Studio Window curated by Xiangyun Chen, a two-part exhibition by fourteen artists who use photography to reflect on identity, intimacy, and spirituality. Each artist experiments with form, material, and diverse subjects to depict intimate thresholds as a means of connection and liberation.
Chen derived the exhibition name, The Studio Window, from the very first photograph, “View from the Window at Le Gras,” taken by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. This exhibition considers the analogy of photography and windows as portals which mediate between the exterior world and interior self, circulating creativity. The camera’s body becomes the practical and metaphorical chamber of the studio; the lens acts as a window into the artists’ mind.
Each artist presses their face against the glass, leaving clouds of living breath. This can be seen in a variety of forms, from portraiture, collage, and mixed media, to photographic papers and weaving on book pages. Some photographs are portraits of family members, lovers, or friends. Some are staged, while others are found. In their reflection, these artists build a sort of harmony between inside and outside as a means of both resistance and reconciliation.
SEQUENCES, ITERATIONS AND PERMUTATIONS (SIP)
A multimedia, group exhibition exploring malleable forms and interactive relationships with time.
“Often artists work in groups of images or series. SIP explores how working iteratively (building upon previous forms, where information is lost and gained through making) helps artists’ creative process, pushing their imaginations to get to the next idea that is meaningful in their practice / life. Because artists in the exhibition are dealing with multiple images, time is involved and participants are influenced by durational art forms such as video, fashion, dance, and music. Even when viewing one image, the viewer experiences a duration of time. SIP is rooted in image making, but many artists embrace mediums such as video art. In SIP, art making is like writing or music and artists explore rhythm, speed, interludes, beginnings, middles, and endings.” - Hyde Park Art Center
